Tool Buying Tip: Buy Impact Rated 3/4″ Sockets

Warranty GONE!

The saying “Do as I say, not as I do” applies to this article.  A long time ago I was in need of a 3/4″ socket set to complete an axle repair on my 1991 Chevy truck.  Rather than spend the extra money on impact rated sockets, the money was saved, actually wasted, and normal sockets were purchased.  These sockets worked well in their intended use as a cheap set of 3/4″ sockets.  The ratchet sucked, but the teeth held under load.

Any time you work with large fasteners, there will be a time when an impact wrench was needed and there was a handy adapter in my tool box to go from 1/2″ drive to 3/4″.  That was the end of the cheap set of 3/4″ sockets they they slowly were tore up in all areas by my 1/2″ drive impact wrench.

The need for good sockets that were larger became more apparent and there were some choices to make.  At that time, the decision was made to move forward on impact sockets alone.  There did not seem to be a great choice out there for a 3/4″ ratchet that was affordable.  So the use of my cheap ratchet continued until I broke the teeth and tore back a layer of skin on my hand.  At that time, here was a problem to solve and a significant need for a good 3/4″ ratchet.

In looking around, Tekton became the brand that was going to be able to supply a solid, reliable ratchet, accessories and also compliment my current Tekton 3/4″ drive sockets.  Tekton offers a kit that gives you a ratchet, breaker bar, extensions and a lot of sockets.  The good news is the price of this full impact ready kit is very close to the same price as the junk I purchased many years ago and Tekton has a lifetime warranty on these tools that will not be denied for severe use.

Take our advise and at least look at the price.

TEKTON 4899 3/4-Inch Drive Impact Socket Set, Inch, Cr-V, 6-Point, 3/4-Inch – 2-Inch, 21-Piece

Buy Once & Save

Our point in the YouTube video and in this article is to save you some money.  If you go with Tekton or another brand, buy impact rated sockets for larger fasteners.  At some point, you will need an impact wrench and they will tear up a cheap non-impact rated socket, destroying your warranty and leaving you stuck with a bolt that will not come off.
