Ryobi One+ 18v Ultimate Combo Kit

Ryobi 6 Tool Lithium Ion Kit

Looking for an affordable combo kit that has just about everything?  This “Ultimate” kit is a do-it-yourselfer’s dream full of Ryobi of 18 volt lithium-ion tools. The kit includes the Ryobi One+ reciprocating saw, impact driver, circular saw, drill, multi-tool, work light, single battery charger and two compact lithium ion batteries.   I was very surprised in the box when I first looked at it.  I had it in my head that they must have packed the tools in very tight to fit in the box.  When I opened the box, I was surprised to see the tools inside the bag and almost ready to be used.

This kit is currently for sale at Home Depot for $259.00 so my expectations for long run time and high torque tools were set low.  A single tool in this bag from a different manufacture could cost the same amount as this entire kit with a single battery.  As I pulled the tools out, I was pleased to see some nice rubber over mold along with LED lighting.  The more I played with the tools the more I was impressed with some of the additional features like a spirit level on the drill, laser on the circular saw and magnet for screws on the impact driver.

Project Time

Ryobi_Recip_SawThere is no better way to test out a combo kit than working with a few friends on a larger project.  A friend purchased a pool and we built a deck around it using most of the tools in the Ryobi combo kit.  While there were other tools there, it gave us a great chance to really try all the tools in the kit and talk about them while we used them.  In the first 25 minutes we found out that the compact batteries were not going to cut it for our project.  Both batteries discharged and we were thankful to have several other 4 amp hour batteries on site.

While this kit is affordable, the buyer might want to find some 4.o amp hour batteries on sale if they take on large projects like this.  The charger can charge a battery in 30 minutes but most of the time, the compact batteries would be discharged in approximately 20 minutes.  Without more batteries, our work would have slowed while we waited for a charged battery.  The 4 amp hour or high capacity batteries really worked well and were just slightly more weight than the compacts that came with the kit.

Favorite Tool

Ryobi_Impact_WrenchIf I had to pick what I felt the best tool is from this kit it would be the impact driver.  The LED lighting is well placed and the 1,600 inch pounds of torque was more than enough to sink 4″ lag bolts over and over.  It did discharge the compact battery in 32 screws, but once it was fitted with the high capacity battery, it sank well over 150 large screws and lags per charge.

Second best would be the multi-tool as it had decent power and was comfortable to use.  The tool will also couple with the Ridgid’s job-max tools so it can also serve more than one function.  That is important when looking at a tool like this because it gives you affordable options going forward.  The variable speed trigger was easy to use and this tool uses less battery charge than the other tools.  We used it for light sanding of corners and some more intricate cutting of the deck boards.

Ryobi Circular SawThe circular saw was a favorite with the other guys mostly due to the laser.  It is a bright laser that helped some of the guys that were not used to these types of saws.  I believe that the saw might work a bit better with an upgraded blade as we had a bit of deflection in the cuts of composite boards.  I did stall it out a few times trying to cut 5/8″ boards over a long cut.  Again, the blade might make the difference.

The reciprocating saw was used most of the day by multiple people and seemed to work great.  While it does say it has anti-vibration technology, it did not feel like it.  The only thing I can say about the tool is that you feel like you are holding on to a case and the saw was bouncing around inside while cutting.  It did a good job and has adequate power, but just did not have the feel of some of the other reciprocating saws that we had there.

Ryobi_DrillThe drill was the least used of all the tools mostly due to the power that people wanted for drilling 1/2″ holes in the composite decking.  The drill seems a bit slow to start and also low on torque when pushed.  We had fun with the spirit level and only wish it reacted a bit faster.  This tool also would discharge a compact battery in a hurry.

The one tool that was not used much was the work light.  Unfortunately it is just not a bright light and very comparable to a normal flashlight.

Overall

Ryobi_Multi_ToolFor the price, you can’t beat this kit if it fits your needs.  If you already have a few Ryobi batteries around from other tools, this is a great deal.  There are over 50 other One+ tools that will work with the batteries in this kit.  Expanding your tool selection can be easy and affordable.  We have reviewed other One+ tools that I think would be a great addition to this kit.  Please let us know if you own this kit or are considering buying this kit by commenting below.
