RIDGID 18-Volt GEN5X Cordless Brushless 1/2 in. Impact Wrench Review | R86011B

Mid-Torque & Compact

Power to weight ratio is a big deal when it comes to any tool that mechanics will be using on a daily basis.  Grip comfort, the tool being able to fit in small areas and the ability to remove 90 percent of the fasteners on an automobile is needed.  In construction, having a 5-pound tool in your tool belt versus a 7-pound tool is a significant difference.

Mid-Torque impact wrenches are nothing new as the demand for them has been very strong, even in pneumatics.  Ridgid might be a bit late to the game, but they did their research and developed a solid tool.  The Ridgid R86011 impact wrench has a 4 mode drive control along with a variable speed trigger to allow for full control over the torque applied to fasteners.  The A-mode is what Ridgid calls auto mode.  That mode allows the tool to fasten an item up until the impact wrench starts to impact.  We found that mode to work great to speed up the installation of lug nuts without the worry of tightening them beyond 40 foot-pounds. Ridgid also used their hex grip on this tool for a very comfortable feel that allows for great grip with or without gloves.

  • 1/2 in. friction ring anvil
  • Lifetime Service Agreement (Fill Out the Paperwork Correctly)

Lugs, Lags & Nuts

Our use of the Ridgid impact wrench has been strictly in the automotive field.  The tool is small enough for us to grab and use as our main impact wrench for light duty work rotating tires, but still strong enough to use on suspension bolts that stretch the limits of a 1/2″ drive.  This size of impact wrench is a game changer for people who use this tool all day  With the size of this new impact wrench, there is no need for a compact impact wrench in 1/2″.  The Ridgid impact wrench work for 90% of the fasteners in the automobile world.  Leaving the large high torque impact to only pick up the really heavy duty work.

This principle of using the smallest and lightest tool for long periods is not new as it is easier on the user as it creates less fatigue.  There is also an increase in productivity as this new impact will get in tighter areas and produce the power to remove stubborn bolts that the old model might not have.  In the mechanic’s world, time is money.  This tool will help the mechanic to finish the job faster, making more money and getting more jobs done.

If I set it to “2”, medium speed, will it still tighten to 450ft/lbs? I ask because if I want to tighten a bolt to 350ft/lbs but no more, will this setting do it for me?
