New Hitachi 18V Brushless 3-1/4″ Portable Band Saw | Model CB18DBL

Mid-Sized Portable Band Saw

Portable band saws are not new, but companies keep finding ways to innovate these tools to make them better and better each year.  Any metal that can be cut on a band saw in our shop is because of the concentrated chip area.  The slow moving blade keeps the metal debris off the cars and away from the wood projects.  Straight up, my shop is used for storage, woodworking, metal fab and small construction.  We have to be careful not to intermix dust from each hobby.

While this band saw works well for us with our shop layout, it will also fit the needs of many others that need a portable metal cutting saw.  The Hitachi CB18DBLP4 features a brushless motor with variable speed from 260 SFPM to 640 SFPM.   In addition to the variable speed dial, there is an auto mode function that automatically adjusts the blade speed from 395 SFPM to 640 SFPM to suit the material being cut, resulting in noise reduction and less battery consumption. It is capable of a max cut capacity of 3-1/4” in round pipe and 3-1/8” x 3-1/8” in square pipe

Mid-Size is Better

There seems to be little variation in size for portable band saws.  They are either very large or very small with very few in the middle.  That makes some sense due to the uses these material cutting beasts see, but in Hitachi’s case, it was nice to see a tool that had a good cut capacity and not be overly heavy.  The band saw will fit into so many different areas that one cannot get the larger deep cut band saws.  Your limitation is the width of cut.  As long as this unit works for the application you need it for (cuts less than 3-1/8″) then you will really enjoy this saw, especially if working overhead.

This band saw has a plastic frame that is fairly rigid, but it will flex slightly as the saw is used and the welded area rounds the pulley system.  The flexing did not impact any of our cuts and was not noticed unless the saw was laying on a bench and used.  Since the tool was meant for high capacity and light weight, there are a few sacrifices that were made and this small flex is probably one of them.

For working overhead, this tool rocks due to the weight.  If you are working in rafters or on saw horses, there is not a rafter hook and one might be looking for a place to hang the band saw.  Overall, the saw performed well and had a lot of power.  Battery life on a 6.0Ah battery was awesome.  Hitachi could get a bit more precise on the battery gauge, or add one to the battery pack itself.  Once you are used to the system, it works well but can leave you guessing how much runtime is left in the larger batteries.  This tools is backed by Hitachi’s lifetime tool warranty, so it will be repaired or replaced if needed.
