Milwaukee M18 FUEL 4-1/2″ / 5″ Braking Grinder Review

2783-22 Grinder Review

milwaukee_fuel_rapid_stop_grinderMilwaukee Tool now has a cordless braking grinder that stops accessories in less than 2 seconds.  The electronic break is a great improvement to an already top performing grinder that Milwaukee boasts it delivers the power of a corded grinder. To add to the list of things we really enjoyed in this unit, the grinder also features tool-free accessory changes using the FIXTEC nut and guard adjustments, including guard removal.  This kit comes with two M18 Redlithium XC5.0 Battery Pack to provide up to 4X more run time and 20% more power. With a Fuel products, this grinder features REDLINK PLUS Intelligence that allows the unit to communicate with the powerstate brushless motor and battery pack.  The grinder is built with the same tool body, gearing system and anti-vibration side handle as Milwaukee’s legendary high-performance corded grinders.  If you use a grinder often, this is a great package.

Features

  • Rapid stop braking feature stops cutting disks in 0.9 seconds, flap disks in 1.3 seconds and grinding disks in 1.5 seconds
  • POWERSTATE brushless motor: delivers maximum power and up to 10X longer motor life
  • REDLINK PLUS intelligence provides optimized performance, electronic clutch and overload protection using total system communication between tool, battery and charger
  • REDLITHIUM XC 5.0 battery pack provides superior pack construction, electronics and performance to deliver 2X more run-time and more work over pack life
  • Power to grind: world’s first cordless braking grinder with corded performance
  • Same metal housing and gearing system as legendary high performance corded grinders
  • 100% tool free: make all accessory changes and guard adjustments without a wrench
  • Included: (1) M18 FUEL 4-1/2 in./5 in. braking grinder (2783-20), (2) M18 REDLITHIUM XC 5.0 extended capacity battery pack (48-11-1850), (1) M18 and M12 multi-voltage charger (48-59-1812), (1) flange nut, (1) fixtec nut, (1) T1 guard, (1) T27 guard

Corded Power that Stops

milwaukee_fuel_rapid_stop_grinder_comparisonThe rapid stop braking feature of this unit allows you to make a cut or grind and the tool should be stopped by the time you set it down.  That reduces the chances that you will accidentally cut or scratch other metal items on accident.  In the case that John uses the grinder, he can use his wood carving items and not worry about an accidental carving of a workbench or outdoor table.  The feature allows for safety and productivity and it does not change the use of the power tool at all.  I really enjoy features like that because most new safety features have a down side.

The new grinder, like the older Fuel grinders, has excellent power.  When grinding metal, I have no hesitation on leaning on the grinder a bit when more material needs to be removed.  Stalling the unit is not something I think about when using a Milwaukee Fuel grinder.  I cannot say that about all the different units I have used.  Since this unit is packed with two 5 Ah batteries, the power provided is greater and the run time longer.  That is a plus for users who want this on a service truck that is on the road.

Tool Free

milwaukee_fuel_rapid_stop_grinder_quick_change_nutBefore I hit the trigger on this grinder at John’s home, I knew I wanted one.  Beyond the braking, more power, and 5 Ah batteries you have a tool free accessory change system.  I really like the tool free accessory change.  One of my pet peeves when working with a grinder is having to carry a wrench with me to change wheels.  This system has a nice flip up handle that allows you to change the accessory without a single tool.  The only down side I see with this is that it might be hard to lift the handle with heavy gloves.  The gloves I was wearing were a medium leather and I used the seam at the tip of my pointer finger to slip under the spring loaded handle to flip it up without issue.  I tried to sneak the tool free spindle nut on my older Fuel grinder as most take the same size nut, but John quickly told me that would not be alright.

Overall

milwaukee_fuel_rapid_stop_grinder_trigger_paddleThis unit has not changed much cosmetically from the Fuel grinder of last year.  It is slightly longer due to the braking mechanism, but the handle, paddle and other traits in the grinder are all the same as the other unit.  I have no complaints with either unit and would feel comfortable recommending them to anyone I know.  The kit with two 5 Ah batteries can be a bit pricey, but long term the batteries and performance will pay off.  If you already have a few batteries, the bare tool unit might be more in your price range.  Since prices change, we try not to post them and allow you to check the prices with links below.

Electronic braking is not the best idea, if you consider that spin down is when electric motors get cooled off. Unless they have a separate motor in there with a fan that is. I built a tool like that once, but I have never seen another like it.
