Milwaukee 30 in. 12-Drawer Steel Tool Storage Chest and Rolling Cabinet 48-22-8530

Milwaukee’s Best Tool Box

IMG_20160427_111955479Milwaukee is expanding their steel storage line with a new 30 in. 12-Drawer Steel Tool Storage Chest and Rolling Cabinet.  This new tool chest is model number 48-22-8530 and follows a lot of design qualities from the popular 46″ storage chest that Milwaukee release a year or so ago.  While this storage chest is a bit narrower, the upper drawers are not as tall, allowing for more drawers and giving the end user a great place to store hand tools.  The overall design of the tool box feels like it was made for people who have more than just power tools.  The shallow drawers allow for excellent organization without the need to stack hand tools.

Most everyone stares at this storage chest and loves the looks.  This storage chest is about much more than looks.  With 11 drawers rated for 100 pounds and the bottom deep drawer rated at 200 pounds, this tool chest is made to hold a large amount of heavy tools.  The 5″ lockable casters are easy to lock or roll around the shop even when you come across some uneven ground.  The integrated metal pegboard allows for a fully custom storage design for tools that are accessed often.  The lower cabinet has in integrated power strip that is located just above pre-drilled and tapped holes designed to mount multiple battery chargers.  Even the pull out workstation will work well for many people who need a space to put papers or a laptop while working.  So, not only is this tool box sharp, it has been designed for the person who needs efficient and organized storage.

Drawer Dimensions

  • Upper chest: 2 drawers- 12.2 in. W x 15.9 in. D x 1.77 in. H; 3 drawers- 25.79 in. W x 15.9 in. D x 1.77 in. H; 1 drawer- 25.7 in. W x 15.94 in. D x 2.13 in. H
  • Lower cabinet: 3 drawers 25.7 in. W x 15.9 in. D x 2.8 in. H; 2 drawers 25.7 in. W x 15.9 in. D x 4.9 in. H; 1 bottom drawer 25.7 in. W x 15.9 in. D x 10.2 in. H

  • Soft-close, 100 lbs. rated ball bearing drawer slides
  • 6-outlet UL listed power center built into the lower cabinet’s side wall
  • Reinforced, 6-Gauge angle-iron trolley base frame and 20-Gauge steel construction
  • Four 5 in. x 2 in. industrial-grade, polypropylene casters (2 swivel with brake and 2 rigid)
  • Pre-cut, premium, solid drawer liners are included as well as an extra thick
  • Double 100 lb. slides on 10.2 in. deep bottom drawers provide a 200 lb. total load rating
  • Gas struts and a recessed chest lid handle
  • Removable 4-station power tool organizer in the deep, bottom cabinet drawer

Cost vs Quality

IMG_20160427_112112688There are few other options in tool chests in the $500 price range.  When you start to look for other tool chests with soft close drawers, integrated power, heavy duty slides, included drawer liners and large lockable casters, the other options on the market are slim to nonexistent.  You can spend a lot more to get those features and for that reason, we really feel this tool chest is a great buy.  If you feel this unit is a bit small for you, you can upgrade to the 46″.  If you are like me, you see the benefit in having both for less than the cost of larger single cabinets.  No matter how you slice it, this is a great storage solution for a large number of people.

These items seem to be available in decent quantities at the Home Depot at this time (May 2016) and we hope to see them sell well, but stay in stock!

Quick Modifications

IMG_20160427_112101136We talked about the workstation in our video and how it might work for some, but is not something we use.  The lid to this is easily remove by removing the drawer and drilling out the rivets that hold the lid to the drawer.  This is a five minute modification and give you a fully functioning drawer like all the rest and still retains the ability to lock independent of the other drawers.

This is on the edge of a modification, but adding your charger to the side of the lower cabinet is as simple as slightly starting the extra screws sent with the unit and sliding the charger keyholes over the screws.  You can adjust the screws to tighten the feel of the charger to the lower cabinet.  If this side of your cabinet is open, adding the charger to the side of the box saves you a lot of room.

The power strip on the lower cabinet can turned to allow the switch to the power strip to face the front of the cabinet rather than the rear.  Remove some of the drawers in this area so you can route the cord properly.  Remove the screws that hold the power strip in place and flip the power strip to the desired direction.  Insert the screws and route the cord out of the way of any of the sliding drawers.

We hope you enjoy this storage cabinet!

What is the spacing of the holes where the side handle attaches? I see the handle can be attached on either side of the lower cab?

    Thanks!

    • I would have to measure the spacing, but it can attach on either side.
