EGO POWER+ 16″ Chain Saw & 14″ Comparison

Motor Upgrade

IMG_20160205_081129203EGO came out with an upgraded chainsaw with a 16″ bar earlier this year.  This battery operated chainsaw has an upgraded brushless motor and can be purchased as a bare tool or in a kit with a 5.0Ah battery.  Something else that happened when the new 16″ chainsaw was released was an update to the 14″ chainsaw that has been out for over a year.  Both new chainsaws are actually the same, other than the size of the bar and chain included with each unit.  Now, what separates these units are the batteries that come with the kit.  The batteries will make a difference in the power that is produced by these chainsaws.  The software inside can detect the battery and determine if it is the smaller 2.0Ah 1P battery, the mid-range 5.0Ah 2P battery, or the larger 7.5Ah 3P battery.  The software will allow the motor to draw more current from the larger batteries making it have more power.  The excellent part about this set up is one can buy the 14″ chainsaw and use a larger battery from another EGO product to get the same power that the 16″ chainsaw has.  If this is confusing, just know that the larger battery you put in the chainsaw means the more power the chainsaw will deliver, not matter its size.

IMG_20160205_073729296If you are out looking for a new 14″ chainsaw, there are a few differences to look for.  The first and easiest to spot is the 14″ marking on the bar.  The older model does not say the size on the bar.  If you had two next to each other, the new model has some lines for gripping on the upper bar while the older model has a smooth upper handle.  Both new 14″ and 16″ chainsaws have a brushless motor that is 1,200 watts and spins at 6,800 rpm.  The EGO chainsaw’s use an Oregon bar and chain so they can be easily purchased locally and replaced when needed.

Battery Operated Chainsaw Performance

IMG_20160126_103359166If you are moving to a battery operated chainsaw from a gas unit, you will notice a few differences.  The first will be a trigger safety.  EGO has a button placed on the left side of the trigger that need to be depressed before the trigger will allow the motor to start.  This works well for both right and left handed users.  The second item that stands out if the lack of noise.  The main noise that is prominent is the motor and the chain rolling over the bar.  While it does not stick out, the trigger is not a variable trigger, but the soft start of the brushless motor gives the feel of one when starting the unit.

IMG_20160205_090626501For our testing of the CS1600, we went out to cut down a 12″ tree that was about 40 feet tall.  Our expectations was the saw would be low on battery once we were done dropping the tree and cleaning up.  To our surprise, there was enough left in the battery to cut a smaller 7″ tree next to it down and clean up with still some juice left in the battery.  This saw is the longest lasting battery operated chainsaw we have used to date.  We still could use a larger battery from our 21 inch self-propelled mower to get even more power and runtime.

This is an excellent saw for a homeowner who does not use a chainsaw often and wants it to be usable at any time without having small engine issues.  The saw has all the power to cut up fairly large trees and take care of most tasks people would be willing to take on.  This is an excellent addition to the growing line of EGO outdoor power equipment.

I just purchased a 14″ model EGO saw. Is it possible to swap out the 14″ bar and chain with a 16″ bar and chain for occasional use on larger trees?

    Thanks!

hi, Thanks for the review. I’m deciding between the Stihl MSA 200 C-BQ and the ego saw. I already have batteries for both from my lawncare business. Any preference one way or another? Thanks again.

Where can I buy a 12 inch, diamond tip bar for this saw. Will use for wood sculpture. Love the saw, it’s a work horse.
