EGO 56 Volt 21 Inch Battery Lawn Mower In Use Tests

Torque of Gas Test

EGO_21_Self_Propelled_Mower_SideEGO Power+ has a new 21 ” standard and self-propelled mower this year that is flying off the shelves at Home Depot and for good reason.  The new 21″ models are slightly larger than the last generation, but are much more powerful with longer run times.  There are some differences between the two 21″ models that goes a bit deeper than being self-propelled or not, so check out our technical video here.

The torque of gas without the noise, mess, and engine that wont start and fumes. Think about that for a second.  It is true that you can get a quality lawn mower that runs on a 56 volt battery pack and will provide most people the ability to mow their lawn on one single charge.  When you compare a battery operated motor with a gas engine, torque is normally available from a low rpm all the way through the rated rpm for the motor.  Gas engines are normally almost the opposite.  Gas motors will begin with a low torque and build up over a time before it starts to drop off again in higher rpm’s.  We are not discounting the torque comparison that EGO makes, but we bring this up because this is a battery operated system and the torque is going to be a factor of how much power is pulled from the battery.  The power is completely determined by how fast a company is willing to deplete the energy in a battery.  This is a complex way of saying there is a serious struggle between the amount of power to give a tool and the amount of runtime it will have.  In this case, EGO has the software able to allow this unit to provide a comparable amount of torque as a gas lawnmower with a runtime of about 60 minutes.

Serious Testing

Lawn mowers are very similar to cars because some people take car of them like they are a baby and other abuse and use them without a care.  Our testing had to reflect the differences in the use of how people feel about this tool and how it would be used.  Basically, we went at the test with lots of abuse, but the want of a finely manicured lawn.  Our first tests we in very deep and thick grass and to our surprise, the lawn mower went through it with ease.  Our standby gas lawn mower did not cut as well as the EGO.

Second, we tested run-time by cutting our 1.5 acre lawn over and over each week to get an average of the run-time when the grass was tall, short, wet, dry and in some cases simply over grown.  We averaged between 53 and 68 minutes of run-time under the different circumstances.

Third, we put the mower through some tests that some mowers may see and may not see.  We left the mower outside for a week of rain, uncovered, dropped the battery in and mowed.  We took a pressure washer to the unit, top and bottom, and then mowed.  We mowed grass in the rain to see how the cut quality was.  The mower was dropped out of the back of our truck on cement (stuff happens!) and we in general abused it to try to find a weakness.

The biggest downside to the mower that we found is the front handle area.  There is a 4″ area where the plastic will not allow you to get close to items while going forward.  This is unlike many gas mowers that allow you to trim right up next to a tree in forward.  With the EGO, one will have to trim from either side.  Other than that, in our testing, the 21″ self-propelled EGO mower has been the best mower we have tested to date for power and cut quality.

Comfort

EGO_21_Self_Propelled_Mower_AdjustThe fold-able handles are adjustable to fit the height of almost anyone.  Being a taller person, the handles of many mowers have never fit me well.  This one will adjust up and give me options for fitment, including an option that feels too high.  The mower height adjustment is a simple one lever operation that will quickly adjust all four wheels in half inch increments from 1.5″ to 4.0″.  Moving from mulching to bagging is simple and tool free.  The self-propulsion is adjustable in speed from 1.8 mph to 3.6 mph and when the battery dies, there is a reserve that allows the self-propulsion motor to keep working allowing the user to get the mower back to the area where the charger is stored.

Overall

EGO_21_Self_Propelled_Mower_BatteryThere are some motor and battery differences between the self-propelled 21″ model and the normal 21″ model that would have me pushing people to the self-propelled model.  The self-propelled model comes with a 1,000 watt motor compared to the 750 watt motor of the push model.  The self-propelled model also comes with the larger 7.5 AH 3P battery where the push unit comes with a 5.0Ah 2P battery.  So the cost difference between the push and self-propelled models gets you a lot more than another motor to help you move the unit when mowing.  Keep that in mind while looking at these units.

    Question. When I’m not mowing. Should I leave the lithium batter in the mower or leave it on the charger unplugged. I have an ego 21 inch self propelled
