Bosch GCB10-5 Deep Cut Band Saw Review | 4-3/4″ Depth

Corded Affordability

The Bosch Power Tools GCB10-5 deep-cut band saw is a corded band saw that features a 10 Amp motor with variable-speed settings from 100 surface feet per minute up to 380 surface feet per minute.  The Bosch GCB10-5 has a cut capacity of 4-3/4″ and weighs only 14.5 pounds.  The LED light can be turned on and off via a switch on the side of the band saw next to the auxiliary handle.  Bosch Power Tools also integrated a saw hook allowing the user to hang the band saw between cuts.

Being a corded band saw can have some great benefits that offset being tied to the cord.  One of the reasons we enjoy corded band saws is because we do not have to buy into a specific battery line to choose a really good band saw.  That is a big deal as many people feel stuck to one brand due to the investment in batteries.  Second, this tool will be mounted to a Swag Off-road bench so it can be used in place or be removed and used as a portable band saw.  That means we do not have to drop a battery in the saw to make a single cut as it is not the most used tool in our shop.

Build Quality

Workshop Addict has looked at many band saws on the market and found that many battery operated band saws are built with more and more plastic components.  Some band saws we have used have even flexed with blade as it circled.  The Bosch Power Tools band saw is mostly metal and very solid.  Ergonomically, the band saw is very comfortable and the 13.5′ cord allows for some travel before one needs to find an extension cord.  The pulley covers are made of metal and are attached together by a small piece of metal that covers the rear portion of the blade.  You must open the two covers at the same time or it will feel like one could bend the metal that bonds the two covers together.  It would have been nice to see them operate independent, if for nothing else but a better feel when opening the covers for a blade change.

Bosch Power Tools continues to innovate in corded tools.  These tools will outlive many battery platforms and continue to perform at their peak with very little maintenance.  Cordless portability is awesome, but it comes at a price.  Part of the price is the batteries and also possibly being tied to a single brand.
